Methana

The peninsula of Methana and the provincial town with the famous baths and thermal springs of Methana is located in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese. The first reference to Methana is found in the historian Thucydides 5th BC. Of course, already from the Neolithic era there was continuous habitation in the area, this was found when a statuette (head) was found in the Acropolis of ancient Methana in Paleokastro (Vathi), Cycladic style dating back to 3,000 BC. The peninsula of Methana was inhabited in various times , Mycenaean, Roman, Byzantine.

There are 32 volcanoes on the Methana Peninsula and volcanic activity on the peninsula began over 1 million years ago and continued sporadically until 300 years ago. The last eruptions took place in 1700 in a submarine volcano north of Kameni Chora. It is considered one of the five active volcanoes in Greece along with the volcanoes of Nisyros, Milos and the two volcanoes of Santorini.

In Methana there are thermal springs , where in recent years, the organized baths are not used. In the peninsula there are some quiet and beautiful villages where we can visit them either by car, or if we love hiking, there are 18 beautiful paths where the villages are connected to each other.

There are beautiful small beaches on the peninsula of Methana, where you can enjoy the sea with turquoise waters and small taverns by the sea where we can taste the Mediterranean cuisine. Near Methana there are also some small islands such as Aegina, Agistri, Spetses and Poros, which you can visit with the small boats of the line.

Nearby is the theater of Epidaurus where various theatrical performances take place for anyone who wishes to enjoy ancient and modern theater.
